Finally Healed

I started school as a very nervous child of five years old. A few days later we had a fire drill. We were on the second or third floor, and the teacher put a large canvas tube through the window onto a wooden sliding board. There were teachers at both ends. As the teacher started putting the children into the tube, I was scared I would get stuck in there and smother. The teacher talked me into getting in, but there was a pile up of children in the end of the tube. It was dark inside. I found it hard to breath and started screaming. By the time they got me out, I was so traumatized that I had to be taken home.

I blocked all this out of my mind, but from then on I suffered from claustrophobia. When I was 20, my father told me what had caused this, and as he told me, I remembered it all, and relived it again. After this I still had claustrophobia, and I also had the bad memory to deal with.

I had read about healing of memories and how we can pray asking Jesus to enter into a bad memory with us as we relive it. I wondered if this could help me with my claustrophobia. One morning after my devotions, feeling very close to Jesus, I decided to try. As I prayed, I thanked Jesus for coming into my life, for changing me into a new person. I thanked Him for my church and for the Christian fellowship I enjoyed. I asked Jesus if He would come into my past with me as I relived it and help me overcome my claustrophobia.

I sat there with my body and mind relaxed. I was leaving what ever happened up to Jesus. I sat there for a few minutes and then started to relive the event – the teacher persuading me to get in the tube, the panic and darkness when I was stuck in there. Suddenly there was a light above me. I felt like I was in a warm bath, peaceful and calm. I realized Jesus was above me in the tube; He was the light. I rested in this lovely peace awhile, and then I was moving out of the tube. When I came out, Jesus was there to catch me. I saw myself as that little five year old girl whom Jesus was talking to and loving.

Since this happened, a year or so ago, my claustrophobia of over 60 years is gone. Now when I think of what happened to me as a little girl, I feel a great peace.
